Mercury and Argus — Italian School, Early 18th Century
Attributed to the circle of Andrea Procaccini (1671–1734)
A refined mythological scene depicting Mercury and Argus, drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Mercury, identified by his flute, is shown lulling the many-eyed giant Argus to sleep — a quiet yet charged moment before the decisive act.
The composition reflects the elegance of the Roman Baroque tradition, with soft modelling, warm tonalities, and a balanced landscape opening into the distance. The figures are rendered with a classical restraint characteristic of the circle of Andrea Procaccini.
Oil on canvas, early 18th century. Italy.
